Paul Lehr 2, for The Best of New Worlds

Despite somewhat mixed reviews for the series, I could not resist the chance to get the first six volumes of The Best SF Stories From New Worlds edited by Michael Moorcock.

And they did not disappoint here we have the Lehr trademarks, alien looking aliens, enormous machines, bubbles, domes, spheres, miniscule figures and distant cities. And some interesting authors from one of the most influential SF magazines of it's day.

Also a shut out to Between the Covers for a lovely packing job and a discount coupon.

Today I am going to do something a bit different which is post on a collection of short stories rather than a novel. First I will give my impressions of the entire volume and then look at some of the stories in more detail. I guess the stories in any volume mentioning the apocalypse would not be cheery and here Bryant does not disappoint. I have never read anything by Bryant before so I am not sure if these stories are typical of his output or if they unusually dark because of the theme of the collection. The stories also raise a couple of other issues that I often ponder. I am always interested in how porous the boundaries between genre fiction is so that SF often is heavily influenced by mysteries, Asimov’s Caves of Steel/Naked Sun come to mind or for horror George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyer is a great example. In this collection I do see a strong horror element in many of the stories. Also I often wonder what constitutes SF, this something I still do not have a concise answer for. I think it is very different things to different people and certainly some of the stories in this collection raised that in my mind. I did expect from the subtitle that these stores might share some progression or continuity but that is not the case. While most point to some kind of societal disruption it can be overpopulation, nuclear attack, terrorism, biological weapons, class warfare or some kind of creeping ennui as far as I can determine. The stores are more closely tied together by characters infected with a certain world weariness, impotence, ineffectualness, or sexual disfunction. Victimization is a theme that seems to run though may of the stories. We can also throw in hints of bestiality, torture tales and some cannibalism so yes they are dark. For me some of the most successful stores were those that hewed most closely to some more predictable SF trope. This is a personal preference not necessarily a fault of the author. I did notice that I often liked the longer rather than the shorter stories in the collection. It seemed the added length allowed for more character development or a more clearly defined plot. Some stories were so short, the theme or plot so poorly developed that they did not hold my interest. Often when I read SF I consider the plot or characters in terms of other SF I have read and I will continue this here. I am only going to discuss selected stores to be quite honest some I did not like others I simply did not see much of a point to and did not feel like rereading. However since I did typify this as a journey I am going to try to read books and authors that challenge me. 

Shark: This is the only story in the collection I can say I really enjoyed. Marcus Antonius Folger is an oceanographer formally of the Marine Institute on East Falkland who has spent the last decade in a village on small island in the south Atlantic. During the war he was part of as project to weaponize sharks and killer whales using human volunteers. Now he lives quietly on the island occasionally helping the islanders with war “relics” until representatives of the Protectorate of  North America come to recruit him for an unnamed project. The SF element seemed a bit weak but the backstory and the island setting were defined enough to make the story work for me. 

Adrift on the Freeway: Richard Forrester is an professor at Kenner State College and logical successor to the current head of the English department. On a driving trip to a conference with a colleague they speculate on the growing phenomena of cars abandoned on the freeway with not trace of the occupants. He also indicates his unhappiness with his career in such a provincial backward college and community. This story seemed more closely related to the meditations or fabulations of Ray Bradbury’s later stories than typical SF story. 

Jody after the War: A somber look at love after a nuclear war. Dated a bit by having one character work as phone booth repair man.

The Poet in the Hologram in the Middle of Prime Time: Ransom an unsuccessful poet has become increasingly unhappy with his paying job writing scripts for Unicorp the North American leader in holovision programming. But his frustration boils over when the network Director General Amelia Marchin indicates that new technology will allow viewers to participate in the actual scripts using subliminal cues and that feedback circuits will allow viewers to direct the action and alter the program as they desire. Here we have the parlour walls of Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 taken to their logic conclusion creating a technology close to the virtual reality of our cyberpunk future. 

The Human Side of the Village Monster: Terri and Peter live in a dystopic New York reminiscent of the darker visions of the late works of John Brunner. Attempts at population/social engineering have created widespread crime, food shortages and the necessity of carrying respirators when venturing outside while going to get Terri’s contraceptive medication. Their lives are further disrupted when they invited to dinner by a neighbour. This story has more of a SF gimmick story feel in the final denouement but I am not sure this fits with the rest of the story.

Among the Dead: A somewhat grisly take on the last 2 men and 1 woman in the world story.

I deliberately did not research Bryant before reading this collection. I see he has won 2 Nebula awards for short stories, they do not appear in this collection, and that he has a slew of award nominations. In the entry in The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction edited by James Gunn the entry notes that many readers have questioned whether Bryant’s stories like “Shark” are SF the entry goes on to note that “Indeed most of Bryant’s stories are obviously science fictional, but he presents them as fables rather than stories of credible, detailed worlds.” It also states “His well written and stylish short stories deal with tense social and psychological issues.” While I cannot dispute the latter I did not find most of the stories in this collection either well written or stylish. This indeed was a problem for me, I feel that short stories should be richer more evocative than a novel with strong imagery and a well invoked setting or characters they should not be as discursive or confused as I found some of these stories to be. Based on the industry response to his stories it is obvious that Bryant is considered a very good short story writer and it seems that Bryant’s themes and writing style simply do not resonate with me.

Venice

My wife and I returned from 8 days in Venice Italy Friday night. (snow since then) More on this on my other blog but I will mention, it is a great city and 8 days are not nearly enough time to see all it has to offer. Great religious art by Titian, Bellini, and Tintoretto, spectacular buildings and even great surrealist masterpieces at the Guggenheim like Max Ernst's The Antipope and Attirement of the Bride, Yves Tanguy's The Soul in the Jewel Case, Paul Delvaux's The Break of Day and De Chirico's The Red Tower. We were indifferent to Ernst paintings until we saw them in person, then wow. But this is a SF site. Some time ago Joachim Boaz ran a series of posts on an Italian artist that produced some astounding SF covers

My wife had pointed out that there is a bookstore in Venice that is famous for keeping books in boats so we decided on a visit. Of course I had to see if they had any works by Allison.

As we arrived, a tour guide was leading a group in but they dissipated in seconds after a quick photo. Okay it was a bit musty, the books were stacked vertically on tables to the ceiling, between 3 and 4 feet. So I stood on a rickey step stool (mentioned that my health insurance cards were in a pouch around my neck)  and started handing books down to my wife to get to the titles I was interested in. Luckily these have distinctive spines. I found five Libra Ediitrice and some Urania volumes a SF magazine that often reprints American and British SF. I don't read Italian but I love SF illustrators.

As we had been trying to get into the glass shop of Vittorio Constantini for some time (for many of the small shops in Venice the posted hours are the best case scenario) I decided I had enough. Before we left the owner insisted we visit the garden to see the canal.  By this time I was tired of climbing but my wife bravely clambered up and reported there was indeed a canal.

a small bookstore we stumbled across while looking for a banking machine. Yes the glass store opened but their credit card machine was broken. Armed with a map we set out only to get lost, again.  Part of Venice's charm is spending part of each day a bit lost, Marco Polo actually only went out for milk. The proprieter also had a beautiful copy of 

Urania containing the Sands of Mars, by Clarke, in Le Sabbie Di Marte 10'11/1952, but I found the $160 Euro price tag high.

I settled for The Four Sided Triangle by William F. Temple #56 in the classic's series for 15 Euros a bit more than twice the cost of the books from the other store, and directions to the banking machine. The Four Sided is the story of childhood friends who fall for the same girl. As usually happens she moves away they become scientists, she moves back and they create a matter duplication machine, ah! high school! It became an early Hammer Horror film in 1953. And yes we bought some lovely glass. Sorry this post is so long and arrivederci.

New Arrivals

I realize I have not been posting very much over 

the course of summer and I now will be taking a bit of 

a hiatus till mid-Oct. as my wife and I have some plans. I 

may still comment on other sites, and hopefully I can be a 

little more prolific going forward.

After a couple trips to Fair's Fair books I do have some books

to look forward to. Some quick math has told me that it is 

unlikely I will finish all the books already in the house before

the great Starmaker returns me to the multi-universe or 

whatever happens but what I hell I bought more.

Killer Pine is a sequel to Cold War in a Country Garden,

which I have not read, the cover is by Chris Foss I am more

 accustomed to seeing his spaceships but I am a sucker 

for giant insects. Also the blurb on the back begins 

" The Canadian forests are dying." Given that the Inuit, 

Rockies and forests are such a big part of the 

 Canadian identity I had to get both books.

Bud Webster (1952-2016)

 This summer I was at the cabin which meant I did not post as much as I had planned. It also meant that I did not order lots of books from ABE because I did not have room to bring them back what with our tools, my wife's telescope and 3 dogs. There was also the possibility of a postal strike which curbed my enthusiasm. So I did something almost as fun, agonized endlessly about my first order. When these obstacles were out of the way, I was interested in four volumes of Ballantine's six volume series by William Tenn, published in 1968.

Another potential purchase was the first five volumes of the Alpha anthologies edited by Silverberg, Bud Webster has been my go to authority on anthologies since I first stumbled across his essays on the web (link below) so I did some googling. 

It was then I learned that Bud had passed away in Feb. 2016. Bud was not much older than I am and one thing that had attracted me to his essays on anthologies and important
SF authors was that many were books and writers important to me in my youth. The portrait he painted of himself as a bookish boy disinterested in sports who saw the library as a safe and welcoming place and SF as it's greatest attraction was also familiar to me.

I have have read, bought and accumulated SF most of my life, but my focus has changed over the years. I collected small press but they got expensive, pulps largely for the covers but I have run out of room to display them and I will not buy them to keep them in boxes. A number of the blogs I currently follow focus on 1960's and 1970's SF and I have been using them to point me to authors and works I have missed.

However my first love was always the Sf short story, thanks Ray, so Bud was a revelation. All the information I could possibly want on anthology series in one place. I started with
the bricks (heavy books) as he described them Adventures in Time and Space by by Healy & McComas and many of Groff Conklin's including the enormous hardcovers The Best of Science
Fiction, The Big Book of Science Fiction, The Treasury of Science Fiction, Omnibus of Science Fiction. while I my wife and I had some anthologies especially Wollheim' Best of anthologies, many edited by Bleiler, Dikty, Merril, Pohl, Silverberg, Knight, Carr, Aldiss Harrison, Carnell etc. have followed. To avoid wallowing in nostalgia I have collected current best of series by editors like Gardner Dozois and the late David Hartwell as well.

I did buy the Alpha as for the Tenn's, well lets ask Bud.

"Not that it matters, really, since I was an ardent fan of William Tenn from whenever I first ran across him. I recall clearly the plans I had for my weekly pay when I was sixteen and delivering papers in the hills around Roanoke. I had a long list of albums (Mothers of Invention, Electric Prunes, Yardbirds and other soft-rock hits) and books I wanted to buy, and among them was the lovely little matched six-volume set of William Tenn stories that Ballantine brought out in 1968. I had to get them one at a time, as they came out, but I was proud of that little row of books and I showed them off to my other sf-reading friends."

There were books in every room except the smallest ones, and occasionally (like Scrooge McDuck) he liked to gather them all in a pile in the middle of the floor, toss them up in the air, and let them come down and hit him on the head. A columnist for the SFWA Bulletin and frequent contributor to the "Curiosities" page of F&SF, he was the author of 41 Above the Rest: An Index and Checklist for the Anthologies of Groff Conklin, the definitive bio-bibliography on the subject, as well as The Joy of Booking: Webster's Guide to Buying and Selling Used SF and Fantasy Books. He also wrote fiction, but not nearly often enough to suit Mary, his Significant Other. He lived in Richmond, Virginia, with the long-suffering Mary and three damn cats."

Sadly Bud died in February 2016 - he will be sorely missed but his memory will live on in the columns below and his writings elsewhere
